CHAPTER 19
David Kettle silently put on his coat and some trainers and walked out to the car. He was tired of it all. Most of all, he was tired of being confused. His mind was playing tricks on him. He was innocent, and that was all he needed to say. He was sure he had never met this woman, and yet something about her was so familiar. Maybe she was in an advertising photograph he had processed. When you work closely on an image, it does become familiar. He resolved to stick to his mantra. He was innocent, but when you sat across the table from the police, there was an air of expectation; they wanted you to say something. They just sat there waiting and making you feel obliged to tell them something, anything, to make them go away. Perhaps he should ask for a lawyer. But that would make it seem like he was guilty. No, he was innocent, and that was all he needed to say. He was shown into the same empty sterile room as before and was offered coffee. Bevan wondered if a pattern of that morningâs comings and goings could be drawn up. It was like choreography, like the steps of a dance laid out for the trained eye to detect. Maybe.
Madison prepared documents for the interview. She made a copy of the email to show David Kettle and notes of the questions she wanted to ask. Then she called Chris, Davidâs boss. Mona answered the call as she had expected, and after firmly stating her rank and name, she asked to be put through to the owner. She was pretty sure that Mona listened in to the calls, so she picked her words with care. It was an official call, she told him. David Kettle was assisting the police with their enquiries. Mr Kettle was there voluntarily to help work out what might have happened. Then she requested copies of David Kettleâs personal emails on the company computer going back for two years. There was a pause as Chris worked out if he had to comply. Madison was ready for him. Of course,
